Neuromuscular Disorder

Neuromuscular disorder is a group of neurological diseases. There are many types including Muscular Dystrophy, Spinal Muscular Atrophy or Multiple Sclerosis.

Muscular Dystrophy

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and Becker muscular dystrophy (BMD) are more common ones. Children may have no symptoms when they are young. Their physical abilities deteriorate since three to four years old. Their calf muscles become large. Their achilles tendons become tight. There is difficulty in climbing stairs or arising from a sitting posture.

Spinal Muscular Atrophy

According to the timing of onset and severity of the disease, spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is divided into three types:

  • Type I SMA have disease onset in infancy period
  • Type II have disease onset in pre-school period
  • Type II have disease onset in young childhood period

Children are floppy and have delayed motor milestones.
